Take control…
Occasionally we meet people who talk about how they want their career to look in 5-10 years’ time. They talk about up-skilling, future-proofing, and long term plans. These people are focussed; if they aren’t too rigid, and if they’re willing to allow for a few zig zags on the road to the future, they often get where they want to be.
Most people decide to move on because they haven’t been promoted, they don’t like their boss, location, money, or they simply fancy a change. These are all valid reasons for a move, but once you have made the decision to move you are committing a lot of time to the process, so isn’t it worth REALLY thinking about the direction you are going?
A traditional research agency career will likely include experience at a large agency, a boutique company, a bit of freelance, client side, and consultancy work. There is lots of great experience to be gained in all these categories, but where do you want to end your career?
Agency: Lots of flexibility, buzz, plus great earning potential.
Client side: More stability.
Freelance: Lots of flexibility but all the stress of finding your own work.
Business Owner: All the stress and most of the fun.
Your career choices affect your whole life, both financially and practically, and it can be the key to a happier life. Life is busy, there is no denying it, however it’s a good idea to take time out to think about where you want to be in the future. If you find it hard to make the time, talk to a trusted advisor. This could be a mentor, your trusted recruiter, or a friend/partner. Saying aloud what you want to achieve can help turn your plan into reality.
