Turning a negative into a positive

It’s been a challenging year for job seekers and this week we asked some of our regular contractors about their experiences during the 2020 lockdown. It has been so inspiring to hear that despite the uncertainty and challenging times many of you are still setting goals and achieving a real sense of purpose.

For this particular contractor a difficult situation turned into something more positive.

“When I left my previous job earlier in the year, I was looking forward to my next challenge, unaware of the pandemic around the corner which turned our world upside down. Being out of work during the lockdown and subsequent months has been tough. With so many people being furloughed and new roles at a premium, I made the decision to use this time as productively as possible. I tried to do this in 3 ways: by getting fit, learning some new skills, and helping other people.

I am proud that I’ve managed to achieve each of these 3 goals. I’ve got back into running regularly; I’ve brushed up on my cooking skills, and I’ve done lots of online learning courses including: Google Analytics, Digital Marketing, and Tableau; and I volunteered in my local community, delivering food parcels to vulnerable people.

So, while it has been a challenging time for anyone who’s been out of work, I’m cautiously optimistic about the months ahead, and grateful for having had this time to develop and grow in different areas.”

It’s important whilst out of work to keep evolving. Training and learning new skills are key, and your next employer will be keen to see how you have utilised your time proactively and productively. Also, your recruiter may be able to guide you in terms of those skills that are most in demand and remember to add your skills and achievements onto you CV as this could help you stand out from the crowd.
